Heritage site located at the heart of the Sydney CBD
The heritage Sydney GPO building was constructed in three main stages between 1865 and 1900 with the first stage being opened in 1874.
The building occupies the whole of the Martin Place frontage between George Street and Pitt Street. Redevelopment of the site comprised of a new 26-storey office tower, a new 31-storey tower for the Westin Sydney Hotel, and incorporation of the heritage building into the hotel. A 5-level basement provides parking for 430 cars.
The 5-star hotel comprises of 390 rooms in the new tower, 50 rooms in the heritage building, and includes a ballroom with a capacity to seat 1,000 guests in a column-free setting. To incorporate the heritage building into the new Westin Hotel, it was necessary to provide extensive structural works to accommodate hotel occupancy requirements in order to improve the seismic resistance of the building and protect vulnerable but historically-significant structural elements.
